The environment for fostering the mission and economic success, if not survival, of nonprofits of all types is rapidly changing. Demands for greater accountability, productivity, and efficiency in an increasingly competitive marketplace, requires us to do more than the traditional organizational tinkering, retrenchment strategies, and “soft”, low-engagement collaborative relationships. Nonprofits are challenged, in the best interests of our constituencies and stakeholders, to step outside of our organizational identities, histories, personality interests, and short-term strategic approaches to creatively imagine and work towards new and vibrant organizational models of partnerships and integration, and yes, even merger.

Both emerging and well “established” nonprofits are therefore challenged to go beyond low risk coordination and collaboration strategies to models that result in consolidations, mergers, dissolutions and transfer of assets, and/or the creation of subsidiary corporations.

This session explores the role of the funder in emerging opportunities for nonprofits to increase mission return.   The continuum of re-engineering venture models including their legal forms (mergers, dissolutions, subsidiaries, joint ventures, etc.) will be discussed with a focus on the investment, risks, and benefits, due diligence, development processes, and resources needed for two or more entities to succeed in corporate restructuring.
